North Metro Fire Rescue District and the Broomfield Veterans Memorial Museum will co-host the 14th Annual Flag Retirement Ceremony on Saturday, June 16, in Broomfield. As part of the event, Broomfield and Northglenn youth are invited to participate in an essay contest for a chance to read their essay at the ceremony.

The Flag Retirement Ceremony will be held at North Metro Fire Station 61 at 1275 Midway Boulevard beginning at 10:30 a.m. A combined police and fire honor guard will participate in the ceremony as well as representatives from North Metro Fire, the Broomfield Veterans Memorial Museum and local scout troops. Following the ceremony, there will be an open house at the fire station and patriotic hot dog cookout.

Essay Contest Rules

Young residents of Broomfield and Northglenn up to the age of 18 are invited to submit an original essay or poem to North Metro Fire on the topic “What the American Flag Means to Me.” Entries should be 400 words or less and should be submitted to sfarris@northmetrofire.org, dropped off in person or mailed to North Metro Fire, Attn: Sara Farris, 101 Spader Way, Broomfield, CO 80020. All entries must be received by 5 p.m. on Friday, May 11. Participants should provide their name, age, address, phone number, email and school with their entry. Essays will be judged by a panel of volunteers from the Broomfield Veterans Memorial Museum, and winners will be invited to read their works at the Flag Retirement Ceremony.

“The Flag Retirement Ceremony is not only a way for us to honor our nation’s flag, but it’s also a great opportunity for generations to come together to retire flags, to remember what the flag represents, and to inspire patriotism in our youth,” said North Metro Fire Chief David Ramos.

Everyone attending may take part in the ceremony by helping cut up and properly retire flags that have been collected throughout the community.
