Sign Up for Free CPR and Stop the Bleed Classes on November 16

CPR Class

If someone receives cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) by a bystander within the first few minutes of going into cardiac arrest, their chances of survival increase two to three times, according to the American Heart Association. Yet, less than half actually receive CPR prior to first responders arriving. North Metro Fire Rescue District is working to change that statistic.

On November 16, North Metro Fire will teach residents how to give CPR, use an automated external defibrillator (AED) and control bleeding from a trauma as part of their free non-certification Family and Friends® CPR classes and Stop the Bleed® classes.

Firefighters will teach the free CPR and Stop the Bleed classes back to back at North Metro Fire’s Headquarters at 101 Spader Way in Broomfield. One set of classes will begin at 9 a.m., the next set will start at noon, and the last sessions will begin at 3 p.m. Participants can attend one or both lifesaving classes and are encouraged to register online to ensure a spot.

Participants will watch an instructional video in the Family and Friends® CPR class and get to practice hands-only compressions on CPR mannequins under the supervision of North Metro firefighters. They will also learn how to use an AED to help revive a potential cardiac arrest victim.

In the Stop the Bleed classes, participants will learn how to pack wounds, apply a tourniquet and further assist a victim who is bleeding from an injury. The top cause of preventable death in trauma is bleeding, and 20% of people who have died from traumatic injuries could have survived with quick bleeding control (Source:

North Metro Fire is able to offer these classes for free with support from Mile High RETAC, which provides equipment and supplies for the classes. While registration is encouraged, walk-in participants are welcome as space allows. Minors are welcome to attend the classes as long as they are accompanied by an adult.
