Fireworks on the 4th: What you should know

Fireworks in Colorado are prohibited pretty much everywhere you go. However depending on what city or county you live in, there may be some exceptions if the fireworks don’t explode or leave the ground.

What is legal?

In Broomfield, you can still use sparklers, toy noisemakers and smoke bombs. In Northglenn, however, sparklers are prohibited.

The police and sheriff’s departments will be increasing their enforcement and surveillance of fireworks activities in the upcoming days. If you’re caught using, or in some cases even possessing illegal fireworks, you could have to pay an expensive fine up to $1,000.

Even using permissible fireworks comes with risks.  Parents should not allow children to ignite or handle these items.  In addition, the following safety steps should be implemented to reduce hazards and potential injury:

  • Adults should supervise all fireworks activities. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees (hot enough to melt some metals).  Children under 5 should not hold or use these items.
  • Never re-light or pick up fireworks that have not fully functioned.
  • Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
  • Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishap.
  • After fireworks fully complete their function, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding in your trash.

North Metro Fire recommends that you avoid the fine and the safety hazards, and take your family to enjoy the professional fireworks show and festivities at each city’s Fourth of July celebration. Here’s the info for these family-friendly free events:
